History of the United States Navy.

The history of the U.S. Navy divides into two major periods, the Old Navy which was known as a small yet respected force of sailing ships. They innovated the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the New Navy which resulted from modernization efforts that began in the 1880's and made the U.S. Navy the largest in the world by the 1920's.

October 13, 1775 is the official recognized establishment date of the US Navy. Eleven years after the Revolutionary War, conflicts between American merchant ships and pirates in the Mediterranean Sea led to the Naval Act of 1794. Over the next 20 years, the U.S. Navy fought the French Navy in the Quasi-War, the Barbary states in the First and Second Barbary Wars, and the British in the War of 1812. In 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy was founded. In 1861 the U.S. Navy fought the smaller Confederate Navy, in the American Civil War, with both sailing and ironclad ships which formed a blockade on the confederacy. By 1878, the U.S. Navy was just 6,000 men.

By 1882, the U.S. Navy consisted mostly of outdated ship designs; so over the next decade massive building efforts were underway to modernize the U.S. Navy. They built armored cruisers and battleships and by the start of the 20th century the U.S. Navy had moved from twelfth place in 1870 to fifth place in terms of numbers of ships. After winning two major battles during the 1898 Spanish-American War, the U.S. Navy continued to build more ships and by the end of World War I they had more men in uniform than the Royal Navy. The Washington Naval Conference recognized the U.S. Navy as equal in capital ship size to the Royal Navy. During the 1920's and 1930's, the U.S. Navy built several aircraft carriers and battleships.

On December 7, 1941 the U.S. Navy was drawn into World War II after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Over the next four years many historic battles were fought including the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, multiple Naval battles during the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the largest Naval battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Much of the activities of the U.S. Navy was concerned with support for troop landings; not only with "island-hopping" campaigns in the Pacific but also with European landings. When the Japanese surrendered at the end of WW2, a formal ceremony was conducted on the battleship Missouri on which officials from the Japanese government signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. By the end of WW2 the U.S. Navy had over 1,600 warships.

At the close of World War II, the U.S. Navy entered the Cold War and participated in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. With the advent of nuclear power and ballistic missile technology, the U.S. Navy upgraded their ship propulsion and weapons systems, which were employed in the Nimitz class aircraft carriers and the Ohio class submarines. By 1978, the number of ships had dwindled to less than 400, many of which were still from World War II. President Ronald Reagan implemented a "600 Ship" Navy which modernized the Fleet to the world's undisputed Naval superpower.
